Ebu Abdullah Muhammed Muhyiddin b. Süleyman b., one of the great Islamic scholars from Bergama.
Ebu Abdullah Muhammed Muhyiddin b. Süleyman b. Mes'ud Rumi-i Kafiyeci, one of the great Islamic scholars from Bergama, was born in Bergama in 788/1386. His father's name was Süleyman. After receiving his initial education in his hometown, he diversified his studies by traveling to Iran and Central Asia within the Islamic geography, and later to Egypt, a center of science. Ebu Abdullah Muhammed Muhyiddin Ibn Süleyman Ibn Mes'ud Rumi-i, known simply as Kafiyeci, gained a rightful reputation in the Islamic world. His works demonstrate his expertise in fields such as tafsir (exegesis), hadith, fiqh (jurisprudence), usul (principles), logic, nahw (grammar), hey'et (astronomy), kalam (theology), and philosophy. In Anatolia, wherever he went, he met and conversed with famous scholars and thinkers. He benefited from and was inspired by scholars such as Mevlana Şemseddin, Fenari, Mevlana Ibn Melek, Mevlana Burhaneddin Haydar, Mevlana Vacit, and Hafızü'd-din Ibn Bezzaz. His journey to Egypt coincided with the reign of the Mamluk Sultan Ashraf Barsbay. The Mamluk Sultan showed him great interest and affection, granting him the academic rank of the era. Egyptian scholars stated that they derived great benefit and honor from being in Kafiyeci's presence and that his scientific prowess was very high. Suyuti, another great scholar of his time, emphasizes in his work 'Tabakatü'n Nuhat' that he attended Kafiyeci's scholarly مجلس (assembly) for 14 years and that unheard-of knowledge was gleaned from every lesson. Rumi was known by the name Hanefi. It is said that he was called Kafiyeci because he taught Ibn Hacip's work 'Kafiye' in grammar for many years. Kafiyeci passed away in H. 1474, and his tomb is located between the Selçuk Mosque Minaret and the Şadırvanlı Mosque. He left behind 41 works. (It is stated that the tomb of Kafiyeci from Bergama is actually buried in Cairo.) Although Kafiyeci wrote many works on various sciences, especially rational sciences, he mostly wrote them as concise treatises when needed and did not strive to record and preserve them. Suyuti even asked him for the names of his works to include in 'Tabakat-ı Nühat', but he replied that he had forgotten their names and could not count them. He had a love for Sufis and people of good character, and a hatred for ignorant and misguided individuals. Most of his behaviors were indifferent, and he had no inclination or love for worldly matters. He passed away in 879/1474.
